"My Fellow Prisoners"

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania: October 8: One hears in Senator McCain's reference to the American population as "my fellow prisoners" the echo of his own ongoing incarceration, the chaining-down of the American military hero, the subgation of the will-to-freedom (Americans) to his will-to-war (McCain, Pentagon, POW). And of course, the echoes of my colleague Michel Foucault who knew well the ubiquity of prison as a metaphor for institutions (alas, even the Presidency).

"Prison continues, on those who are entrusted to it, a work begun elsewhere, which the whole of society pursues on each individual through innumerable mechanisms of discipline."-Michel Foucault
